On August 1, 1990, Charlie became president/CEO of Tribune Company. In 1993, he became board chairman.He oversaw a visionary process for the company that resulted in the addition of education and new media businesses as well as the gradual divestiture of QUNO, on of North America's larges newsprint manufacturers.

Charlie ramrodded technological innovation that put computers at virtually every desktop and championed the extension of the company's content resources into online products and services. Tribune went digital with LANs and the Internet, and got wide on the web.

CTB spearheaded the creation of the New Century Network and delighted in challenging management and employees not only to do things right, but to do the right things.

The Brumback Family had grown to include wives, husbands and handful of Grandchildren -- at least one of which loved to "play with the soft hair on the back of pop's head."
